What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is becoming a commonplace word, especially in the office environment. By itself, the word ergonomics refers to the study of designing objects, such as chairs, keyboards, and workstations, to be well adapted to the form of the human body. Ergonomics can be applicable in many jobs, but it is growing more and more important in the office environment.
The terms computer ergonomics and office ergonomics are pretty much interchangeable. They refer to using well-designed ergonomic chairs, desks, keyboards, etc. -- basically everything you use when working at the computer -- that promotes good posture and good work habits.
Why Is Ergonomics Important?
Good home and office ergonomics is very important because we are turning into a society that spends more and more hours working and playing at the computer. Sitting at poorly designed workstations can contribute to problems such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and repetitive stress injuries (RSI). Bad ergonomics can also cause back and neck pain, frequent headaches, and other related health issues.

When people shop for chairs and desks for the home, they are often swayed by what looks good or what is on special, rather than what is good for their bodies. We should all pay more attention to ergonomics when buying anything we're going to be using on a daily basis. People spend thousands of dollars on cool new computers, then buy a $50 chair from Office Depot. Then they wonder why they are uncomfortable!

Ergonomics in the Workplace
Fortunately, many workplaces are starting to pay more attention to ergonomics in the office (Injuries related to bad ergonomics can cause a loss of worker productivity). Ask your boss about programs that make employees aware of ergonomics and healthy computing. If there isn't such a program, volunteer to start one. It can only help you in the long run.
