What are Computer Monitor Risers and Monitor Arms Used For?

Monitor risers can raise or lower your monitor which may be necessary on a low computer desk, or a desk not made specifically for computers. Monitor arms allow you to move your monitor to and away from your chair. To prevent neck and back injury, your computer monitor should be directly in front of your eyes when you are working, but you may want to move it if you have to do paperwork on your desk.

Monitor risers and monitor arms can help your place your monitor so you don't have to turn your neck to the left or right or tilt your head back or down to look at the monitor.

Some experts recommend tilting your monitor back slightly at the top and having your eye level near the top of the monitor, but there's no steadfast rule for when you need a monitor riser as the comfort level can change from person to person. If you find your neck or shoulders tense after a day at the computer, you may want to experiment with the position of your monitor.

Reasons Why You Might Need a Monitor Riser or Monitor Arm

  • Your neck or shoulders get tense during your workday.
  • You have to cock your head a certain way in order to see the monitor.
  • More than one person (of varying height) shares your workstation.
  • Your vision requires moving the monitor closer to your eyes for some applications.
  • You have an adjustable workstation that accommodates both sitting and standing users.
